Flight back tot Amsterdam from Osaka with KLM on the Boeing 787

✈️ Flight Overview

It was a 6 day trip with two second officers on the flight deck. Due to the long flight time, we bring 4 pilots.

🌍 Polar Route

Our route took us to the east of Russia, over the Bering sea famous from deadliest catch, crossing Alaska, Canada and Greenland before arriving in Amsterdam. We call this a round the world trip as we depart both times in easterly direction. Or most northerly point was 82N. It’s always a beautiful flight with ice as far as you can see and the aurora. The sun barely went under as it’s summer in the norhern hemisphere.

🔧 Technical Situation on Departure

On departure we had a Ram Air Fan left that was inoperative. In case of an inoperative component we look in the DDL, dispatch deviation guide, where it is written if we can depart and if so if any special procedures are required.

The latter was the case, we had quite a complex non-standard procedure to follow for engine start, where we had to manually check some parameters on the maintenance page (normally not used) and beware for specific status messages. It all went without issue.

🛠️ In-flight System Messages

We had some status messages popping up on the way back. For that system we had tripple redundancy (three of the same system on board) so it was no issue. We ping the failures to maintenance with ACARS so they can take a look when we arrive.

I hope you enjoyed.
